Entre dos Fuegos

Artist: Belén Ruta

In “Between Two Fires” Galanter relates time and generative art as complex systems, where order and chaos balance each other. “These complex systems often evolve towards dramatic, fertile or catastrophic forms, even in such an unpredictable way that they can seem random”

The “randomness” of time and the passing of the day are uncontrollable to us. Sometimes time and our desires clash. We look through the window for the company of the sun, the rain or simply the passing of the day. Through the code he sought to find that desire and time. A virtual window that, for a moment, transports us to where we would like to be. “There are no spectacular actions, no beginning, no end. What happens will depend entirely on the intervention and decisions” (Shaw, Groeneveld, 1989 “Legible City”)

Inke Arns writes about the performative dimension of code and how it resembles linguistic expressions. Both describe situations and are also used to perform acts, the effectiveness of language is not measured by what it triggers, but by the language itself “This is precisely where speech act theory relates to the supposed performativity of the code: “[when] a word not only means something, but performatively generates exactly what its meaning designates.”” (Arns I. 2005. The code as a performative speech act). No matter what interactions the user makes, whether it is raining or not, day or night, or no interaction at all, the code will still be performative.

This Virtual Window appears as a continuation of the first code you make. An intervention to a painting by Paul Klee (Three Houses) where the user could control the course of the day. I wanted to take that concept and make it more complex, now the user could not only “control” the day and night, but also the weather through a window. After thinking about possible compositions and searching for references, I found “The Fall of Evening” (René Magritte, 1964). I made modifications to synthesize the shapes and colors, looking for a less realistic aesthetic, but that still projects a dreamlike image.
