Sinapsis de Arte

Artist: Andrés Báez

The evolution of the understanding of art, the personal interpellation regarding the encounter with new concepts, the discovery of different methodologies and processes of art production such as the use of the Log and art with its relationship with science, are the conceptual parameters addressed in this interactive audiovisual work.

“There are complex systems, such as biological life, that require both order, to survive and maintain integrity, and disorder, which allows different levels of freedom in the processes of adaptation, variation and evolution (Mitchell, 2009).”

“…other complex systems would be the stock market, ant colonies, the brain, the mind, the evolution of species, autocatalytic chemical and biochemical systems, political systems and social movements. These complex systems often evolve into dramatic, fertile or catastrophic forms, even in such an unpredictable way that they can seem random.” GALANTER, P. (2011). “Between two fires: art-science and the war between science and humanities.”

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

The work is composed of 2 3D spheres:

  1. In the first there is an image in JPG format, composed of 4 lines of text in the same size in the upper and lower margin and a central line on a larger scale (all with the word Art in white) with a black background, where from the accelerated movement and the use of random in the size of the sphere, different visual hierarchies can be observed, along with the use of various star shapes, which are transformed by the movement of the mouse in space and allow complex linear situations to be observed.
  2. The second sphere is composed of the same elements but in an opposite version in terms of the color of the image, with variations in speed and maintaining the same size in the sphere along with the random use of both the shapes of the accompanying stars, as well as their color.

In the first instance, the work generates different audiovisual situations from the movement of the mouse, that is, the reproduction of the first sphere, and by keeping the mouse pressed and/or moving, the second sphere is displayed in conjunction with the first, thus generating visual superpositions typical of the collage operations.

As for the sound, throughout the development of the work it is the same through the use of a loop, with alterations from the movement of the mouse. It is a sound montage belonging to the personal log, recorded and made with a cell phone, where distortions and mixtures of birdsong and cicadas are heard, alluding to a dense meditative and reflective state. It also has the option to pause the sound using the “p” key and continue playing it by pressing the space bar.
