Panóptico digital

Artist: Nadia Torrejón Torres

We are spectators of an event where we can only observe what happens. In one sector, digital omnipresence is observed that remains visible and constantly increasing. On the other hand, human interactions are observed in death and with little visibility. Where are you holding on?

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

We live in an environment full of social restrictions. Forcing human beings to move completely to virtuality. According to McLuhan “the way of perceiving reality is in direct relationship with the structure and form of information, and each medium is in turn related to a part of the human psyche.” The medium is the message proposes the idea of understanding the media as extensions of the human being.

“Every form of technology is a reflection of our most intimate psychological experience”

For some time now, society has been immersed in virtual environments. However, the pandemic made us almost mandatory digital nomads. Every day we show ourselves in front of apps like Instagram and Whatsapp. Where narcissism and infinite scrolling are totally evident. We live through the Internet in society, it becomes an extensible medium for people, of a ubiquitous and necessary nature that has created dynamics in society, and new forms of interrelation without which we could not now socialize. The work simulates an air traffic control radar screen. Taking into account the principle of radar movement, which consists of an electronic system that contains a rotating antenna that emits a beam of ultra-high frequency (UHF) electromagnetic waves that when they collide with an object, these are reflected and when captured by the same system antenna, they are processed to appear in the form of light impulses on the air traffic controller’s screen. In this proposal we tried to emulate this sensation using oscillation parameters in circles and angle movements. As well as the brightness graduation to allow visualizing a trace in the movement. On the other hand, two dual text rotation parameters were added: one shows the text “digital omnipresence” and the other “Human interactions.” These texts contain percentage parameters in the digital omnipresence text the maximum level of reach is displayed (100%). In contrast, a maximum percentage value of 40% was added to human interactions. In front of these two positions, when pressing click and wanting to hold on to something, the viewer sees a test screen with diffuse lines and a text “he looked around without knowing what to hold on to.” In itself, what is intended to be reflected in the work shown through this parameter is to make it clear that it is impossible to do something, the viewer can only refrain from observing and seeing how the rhythm continues indefinitely and reflect on how human beings inhabit these environments, looking at what is happening in the world without knowing where to hold on.
