Pasta Base

Artist: Leon Daniel Priego Pacheco

Pasta base was created entirely with a practical purpose: to show the purest abstraction of the state I find myself in today; that of an individual who seeks to create, but without a fixed reason for doing so.

The canvas is covered by two layers of lines. The first layer rises vertically across the entire canvas, while the second is divided between the lower-left and upper-right sections of the canvas, intersecting at the boundaries of the canvas, above the first layer.

At the center, there is a circle positioned above the vertical lines.

I took Grace Hertlein, with her work City Painting, as my main reference for the aesthetic aspect. In an almost pedantic manner, it demonstrates how the constant use of intersections between lines can result in patterns that can become recognizable and categorical depending on the perception of the individual analyzing the work. With this same idea in mind, I would like to talk about what José Luis says in his text Redefinition of Artistic Practices.

Art as such is no longer a means of representation, but rather an expression of what he refers to as “forces.” This is precisely what I was looking for with Pasta base: if there are forms in my work that resemble something categorizable and recognizable, it is because each individual recognizes the patterns they want, baased — without even realizing it — on their personal experiences and on the way they dissect the works they see.

For my part, the only objective is the one mentioned previously in the description of the work. It is both an aesthetic and a conceptual principle.

My name is Leon Priego. I started living in Buenos Aires four years ago, and I enjoy spending my free time making and listening to music.
