F41
F41 (psychiatric code for GAD) presents a brain tomography operated on for depression and anxiety, the work tries to show the real change that a brain can have due to the alterations of certain neurotransmitters, the ellipses that are in the center are those thoughts, reactions and actions that arise when one goes through a mental condition that unbalances the desired mental health.
Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development
From a technical point of view, the work takes points with defined variables that are drawn in a symmetrical and fractal manner on the canvas, resulting in a shape similar to the image of a tomography that shows the cerebral cortex. In its center, with a shape similar to the wings of a dragonfly, the thalamus is represented, a part of the brain that shows alterations in its function and connectivity due to depression and anxiety, impairing the ability to concentrate or causing emotional overload. On the other hand, the ellipses that are formed randomly but within what would be the center; where the thalamus is represented, are the intrusive thoughts and unbalanced feelings that one suffers from suffering from a chronic or short-term disorder.
This work takes inspiration from Jared Tarbell’s work, Peter. Of . Jong, which attracted me a lot visually and one of the works precisely had a shape very similar to what I thought was a brain, which changed the path of my project from an abstract idea of intrusive thoughts to the real change caused by the chemical imbalances that generate mental disorders. Tarbell is interested in the emergent qualities of generative systems that simulate life, the organic structures that mostly occur in nature. Jared Tarbell is precisely a programmer willing to improve his algorithms in tandem with advances and the incorporation of greater complexity in hardware.
Jared has stated that he uses the computer as a tool and distributes his codes to those artist-programmers, which makes him enter into what Brea states as “There are no more “artists”, as such. There are only producers, people who produce.” At the same time, contemporary artistic practices that separate themselves from the old labels of fine arts are also contemplated, addressing new tools and modes of production, in this case, the code.
