Artist: Tobias Gorschin

Using a grid of randomly generated diagonal lines, this work explores the balance between structure and variation. Each run of the system produces a different composition, defined by small random decisions. The result is a constantly changing image, where the order is slightly altered, evoking the spirit of pioneers of generative art such as Vera Molnár.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

It starts with a simple idea: a grid of diagonal lines that are drawn one by one, generating a pattern that changes once finished. Although the system is quite structured, the randomness in the direction of each line and the size of the cells makes each image unique. I was interested in exploring that intermediate point between order and chaos, where something that seems mechanical ends up having something unpredictable. I was inspired by Vera Molnár’s generative art, which used clear rules but played with error.

The image is built in real time, step by step, until the entire surface is filled. At first glance it seems orderly, but if you look closely, you perceive a kind of vibration, an internal rhythm generated by randomness.

The idea of introducing variations within a rigid system dialogues with the work of artists such as Vera Molnár, in particular her series (Des)Ordres (1974), where geometric patterns are altered with small deviations. That logic is taken up again: the generative as a form of composition where control and chance coexist. The image does not represent anything recognizable, but builds its own language from lines, repetitions, errors and random decisions.
