Ansiedad

Artist: Melanie Jazmin Diaz

Ansiedad is a work inspired by the artist Vera Molnar. The idea is to represent anxiety in an abstract way, just as anyone could feel it. The intended effect is for the piece to behave like a body, drawing on Molnar’s focus on the geometric and the “perfect”, but adding an emotional component.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

This work was created from a direct reference to du 02 au 05 mars 2017 /// The Armory Show (New York), by Vera Molnar. It is developed in a square format, within which rectangular strips are delimited at the top and bottom, generating a central space that organizes and contains the composition. In this area, four triangular figures are observed which oscillate in a coordinated manner, showing a dynamic that brings “life” to the composition. This movement suggests an act of breathing: the positions of the figures vary continuously, creating a sensation of expansion and contraction. In addition, the viewer is allowed to interact with the work through the use of the keyboard and mouse, which allows different color combinations and user action.

The title of the work, Anxiety, talks about the problem that, despite its frequency, remains a taboo topic. The idea is to give shape to that constant tension, reflected in the incessant movement and in the possibility, as Brea said with electronic art and media art, that the true value of electronic art is not only in support but in activating the “immanent self-criticism” of a person’s artistic language (Brea, 2002), in this sense Ansiedad not only explores the possibilities of code as a means of production but rather is something conceptual.

Now if we talk about (Brea,2008) it mentions the “redefinition of artistic practices of the 21st century”, contemporary art was changing to aesthetic productions, they no longer only consist of the generation of objects but also of creating experiences of activation of senses. So this work enables us not only to contemplate a static image but also to go further in perception even than Vera Molnar, who focused her practice more on the use of geometry and repetition as compositional principles, but nevertheless my intention is to go a step further by providing movement and life to those geometric forms, adding interaction as an essential element.
