Eco visual

Artist: Franco Sardón

Visual Eco is a work that allows the user to generate and manipulate 3D cubes that respond with a click to generate cubes in random locations, with the movement of the mouse you can view them at different angles creating a pleasant perspective for the user, by reacting with the mouse wheel you can control the distance of objects. With the keyboard, the ‘z’ key can be used to capture an exact moment of the work that the user wants. All of this happens in a three-dimensional environment where random events and user actions drive what is seen on the screen. This work seeks to represent the performativity of the code, generating visual and sound echoes that exist only in the moment of interaction, trying to show the art of the code, transforming it into a visual experience in real time, with the aim of making it an immersive and minimalist experience.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

This work seeks to implement the knowledge acquired during the course, such as the possibility of implementing sound, 3D graphics, arrays and randomness within the code. Using WebGL to render three-dimensional graphics, allowing the user to interact with 3D cubes generated randomly in space, wanting to provide an immersive experience. The interaction is designed through mouse and keyboard events, allowing each click to generate a new cube in a random position, the mouse movement to alter the rotation of the space, the wheel to modify the proximity of the cubes and with the Z key to save a .jpg image of an exact moment. In addition, using a sound that is heard with the generation of each cube with the intention of providing a sound layer that reinforces the connection between the user’s action and the digital environment.

Aesthetically, the work hopes to give a minimalist impression in which the cubes change their color ranges as time passes. This simplicity wants the user to pay attention to the changes it generates within the virtual space, such as the angle at which the figures are observed, such as their distance or the number of cubes of the same type.

Conceptually, the work is inspired by theories of performativity. By trying to provide a direct relationship between code and interaction so that the user is part of the creation and modification of the visual environment. By capturing these moments of interaction, the work allows you to reflect on the ephemeral as it is constantly changing depending on what you do, in which each action creates a unique and temporary ‘echo’.
