Artwork presentation

Perspectiva

Artist: Agustin Matamala

This generative artwork explores how the environment and visual forms can be rearranged to offer different points of view, without imposing a specific narrative on the viewer. The piece features a central figure in a three-dimensional space surrounded by a constantly changing color palette. The colors and shapes transform depending on the angle of observation, suggesting that the space, although it seems fixed, is constantly changing. The combination of these visual elements allows each viewer to observe the environment in a unique way, adjusting their perspective to see how colors and shapes interact with each other. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase” and the visual art of Felipe Pantone.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

The work is structured in layers of color and shape that create a constantly changing visual environment, inspired by geometric art and the use of intense colors. This piece features a rising figure situated atop a series of colorful, cubic structures. As the viewer changes the viewing angle, These shapes respond visually, offering new configurations and color blends. According to Inke Arns, “generative art” is characterized by being “a procedural tool that enables the artist or designer to ‘synthesize […] a series of events […] in constant change’” (Arns, 2005). In this sense, the work is not static, but reconfigures itself in response to the position of the observer, creating a flexible visual experience.

The second layer of the work introduces variations in the inclination and rotation of the shapes, showing how the space adapts and reorganizes according to perspective. This reflects the idea raised by César Aira about contemporary art, which “could be the realization of the teleology of modernism” by assuming its role in the present, without the need to anticipate a future or impose a linear narrative (Aira, 2013). This layer of moving elements allows the viewer to discover multiple interpretations of the environment without depending on a fixed structure or a single vision, leaving open the perception of each angle and position.

Finally, the work presents a constant dark background that frames the variations in the foreground and reinforces the idea of an environment that transforms according to the observer’s point of view. Rather than offering a fixed representation, the work allows each interaction and perspective to construct a unique version of the visual environment. Thus, this piece allows the code and generative elements to act as an open structure, capable of adapting to different perspectives. In this way, the work proposes how perception can be constructed from different points of view without imposing a particular narrative, allowing each observer to discover their own interpretation within the visual environment.
