Al borde del infierno

Artist: Martina Giudice Avalos

“On the Edge of Hell” invites the user to immerse themselves in an experience in which death and limbo are explored through a visual and sound narrative. He tries to be transported to a dimension, where he is trapped. The work begins with an image representing death, but as the user interacts with the project, they move through different visual scenes, each representing an aspect of the “spiritual” journey. In the last scene, the image begins to move away, simulating the distancing from reality while the soul is trapped in this ethereal space. The sound setting attempts to immerse the user in a disturbing atmosphere, where the feeling of bewilderment and isolation deepens. The objective is to immerse the viewer in a reflection on the final destination and the impossibility of escaping this phase.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

For the creation of this project, I took inspiration from the literary work “The Divine Comedy” by Dante Alighieri and some works by Bill Viola, a digital artist who explores the themes of spirituality and mortality. However, “On the Edge of Hell” aims to convey a certain feeling of strangeness; At the beginning you see an image that represents the moment in which life on earth ends, adding a small message that says “Accept destiny” which is somewhat comical since at this moment there is no other option. Then we see a succession of images that want to immerse the user in a state of pure uncertainty, loneliness and despair. It travels through several states until it reaches the “final stage” in which it slowly becomes distorted in space and is increasingly farther away, emitting the sensation of distance from the material world. As Fricke expresses in his text “Everything disappears. You have to be quick if you want to see something. Everything disappears”

“Pollock […] conceived the canvas as a space in which painting intervened as part of his biography” Just as Pollock used the canvas as an extension of his life, emotions and experiences, this project uses a virtual space as a digital canvas on which universal and intimate themes such as death, destiny and existential emptiness are projected, which is part of the biography of humans.

In this project the interaction of the expectant is extremely important since this is what life brings to work, with each click the user is transported to a new scene.

In summary, “On the Edge of Hell” seeks to make the viewer reflect on the inevitability of death and the uncertainty of what really happens next.
