Películas Viejas en Oferta

Artist: Juan Bautista Giménez

Brief description. This work is composed of panned videos, images and sounds that seek to represent the harsh Argentine reality. Ghosts of the past that repeat themselves, blows that we feel again but we are not going to let them knock us down anymore. Each factor of the composition was chosen with the purpose of generating a feeling of discomfort, the background of the eyes that changes its contrast to a more gloomy one when all the situations that have happened in our past and unfortunately are seen again are revealed: Violence and Repression. Regarding sounds, on the one hand we have testimonies from the current president Milei and on the other a poem that seeks to balance the harshness of what can be seen and experienced with an incentive to fight to resist; since better times will come..

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

Old movies on sale, that’s what I feel when I see these screens. Something we should have left behind, something we should have learned from. It is almost inevitable to relate the words of Cesar Aira in “On Contemporary Art” (2010) when he mentions that a work “when proposed to perception and memory, it is inevitable that they give off ghosts in time and space. In that sense, the work is just the model of its reproductions and nothing more (the rest is a prestige object, subject to all the accidents and manipulations of any object).” Aira also commented on his obsession with Duchamp and how he considers that Contemporary Art was already established ideologically and theoretically by him and today it freely follows its course. I understand that there is nothing new in what I did and precisely, nothing new is happening today. What gives interest and meaning is the concept that supports the work: The ghosts of the past haunt us and the comparison between images and videos of the last military dictatorship with the present, just as in works of art, shows us how everything that arises has a past that accompanies it, shapes it and gives it life. Another concept that caught my attention was “creating values” and the search for generating in the viewer a certain encounter with their feelings, their past and their history. The exercise of recognizing where we come from, what privileges we have and what path we want to take for our future is important. At this point is where I find a relationship between those concepts developed by Aira and Inke Arns’ text “The code as a performative speech act” (2005) when the author talks about the interest of software art with “performing and executing” the terms of the theory of speech acts (John Langshaw). The search to create a perlocutionary act in which we want to generate a political, social and cultural statement. .
