Confrontación & Proseguir

Artist: Cristhina Dávila

The exploration of the self, without guidance or direction, becomes a deceptive journey. Where doubt and insecurities end up dominating our true essence. However, with a compass the path becomes clearer. My work “Confrontation & Prosecution” represents my conflict of artist identity, blinded and locked up for a long time, and my decision to break with what prevents me from being: the shame of showing, the fear of criticism and perfectionism. One step after another I try to reflect the acceptance of what held me back, since it is and will always be part of me.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

In support of the exhibition of my inner self, I chose to use abstraction as an aesthetic medium, in contrast to my mind, drowned in figurativism. In turn, as I made my way through the use of the software, I expressed this internal conflict, with the code as my paintbrush and the p5.js platform as my canvas. As the writer Arns states, my work is created thanks to the deep and sensitive understanding of software as an expressive medium.

“I would like to expand the notion of generativity in the sense that the code is executable not only in technical areas, but that it can become extremely productive as “imaginary software” for the readers themselves.” Inke Arns.

Likewise, I highlight the strong influence of the artistic background raised in Christiane Fricke’s book New Media. The understanding of the motivations and forms of 20th century artists shaped what is considered normal today: the digital and technological medium. However, questioning this “everyday life” allows us to see beyond and opens new routes of learning, inspiration and knowledge.

Likewise, artist Joshua Davis makes fundamental contributions to the journey of creating my work. His use of code as an artistic tool and his position with respect to this movement figure him as a personal modern reference.

“Confrontation & Proceed” makes use of the WEBGL rendering engine as a means of representing rotating 3D figures that are part of the abstract aesthetic.

The configuration of the work consists of the central figure: a green sphere that grows until it reaches the size of its outer container, a dark glass cube, which ended up fractured. Giving full visibility to the sphere. At the same time, the work also has secondary figures: cubes, pyramids and ellipses of various colors; whose initial opacity is low and increases when the glass breaks. Finally, functions and variables are used that modify the growth of the green sphere, the breaking moment of the glass cube, the opacity, speed and angle of the figures.
