Olvidados

Artist: Catalina Carou

My work is called Olvidados, this is because it is an old television, which when you click on the last round button, the introduction of an old series/cartoon will play on the screen, which varies between the years 2005 to 2013.

This idea arose after seeing a little cousin watching her cartoons on her cell phone. This reminded me of the animated series that I watched when I was little, which nowadays do not appear on modern TVs or you have to pay for a platform to watch them.

The series that will be shown on television are a total of 5 (five), each video was created by different authors, that is why I am going to give them credit by mentioning the series, the year and its corresponding author. . The Doodlebops (2005 - 2007) -> Michael Hirsh . The Imagineers (2008 - 2013) -> Rick Gitelson . Sid the Science Kid (2008 - 2013) -> Jim Henson . Camp Lakebottom (2013 - 2017) -> Eric Jacobson and Betsy McGowen . Uncle Grandpa (2013 - 2017) -> Peter Browngardt

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

This work began with several ideas, many of which did not convince me.

As I read the texts I developed several new ideas, one of them was an old television that was somewhat old and retro, those that bring back memories, both good and bad, but it had a theme, not knowing what to put it together with.

Until reading Fricher Christiane’s text on “new media”, I clarified my ideas “We are sitting on mountains of artifacts accumulated over millennia and we continue to be absorbed in the work of evolving, ordering and understanding them. Meanwhile, the ideas that emerged in our time have been aging, many of the experiments and innovations that have so illuminated this century have fallen into oblivion”

In my way of understanding it is related to great past innovations, which were forgotten or supplanted, a criticism of the progress of the digital age, I mean, the new replace the old.

I wanted to leave the old television in the background, taking the time to investigate what was replaced or forgotten.

Seeing my cousin, with her cell phone, watching her drawings, generated a memory of me sitting in front of the TV waiting to watch my series, knowing that each episode was a new and fun story to investigate.

That’s why I included the series from my childhood on old television.

An old TV, which, when you pressed the round button at the bottom, turned on and played an old series on its screen, ranging from the years 2005 to 2013 with its catchy music.

Include two memories, the old television that I played when I was little and listened to the stories that my grandparents told me and animated series which I watched. Two different times.

When I was uniting two memories I remembered a phrase that César Aira says in “on contemporary art” which says “Art does not have to be done well and it is a regrettable waste of time that young people usually incur in making an effort in that direction.”

This phrase made me think about the creative limitation that exists, all from following rules without being able to explore new forms of expression, as long as just “doing it well.”

I followed the rules, but I decide to take it more about the process, the idea and the technical skill.

With these decisions to include an old TV and modern cartoons for the television era, I try to create an artistic nostalgia, childhood memories, personal memories of the first encounters with art such as songs, series and animations that marked a time in my life, as in the life of someone else.
