Artwork presentation

dia de lluvia

Artist: guadalupe canga

With this work I wanted to reflect a scene that most of us used to do as children. It consists of a rainy day somewhere, on a street, a girl who wants to play, goes out to drop her little boat made of paper so that it moves in the rainwater.

You can see how the rain falls, and in the background you can hear the sound of it to transport us further into the memory. By clicking with the mouse, the boat held in the girl’s hands falls to the floor, and once there, with the arrows it can be moved to the left or right to generate a kind of “game”. You can also hear the girl’s laughter while playing.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

In Aira Cesar’s text, “about contemporary art” she mentions how contemporary art goes beyond the limits, opening the way to freer and more subjective interpretations. Due to this, I tried to express this idea by representing it with the scene described above, where it reflects what most of us used to do in our childhood, so my work becomes a kind of “temporary sculpture” causing a series of memories, both general, for the scene itself, and personal since each one has their story with it.

According to Aira, “Reproduction itself becomes a work of art, or, more precisely, art without a work. “Dream not dreamed,” said De Chirico. Dream not yet dreamed, latent, without the arrogance of what has been achieved. Art becomes a slightly fantastic game over time: it is the documentation of something that was, and at the same time the promise of something that will be.”

I relate it to my work since it is a scene of a girl playing through what could be “art without work”, something that is both a documentation of a moment and at the same time an expression of freedom and exploration. By playing, children are trying out ways to relate to the world, and it is not just an act of the present, but a seed of future experiences, so the act of playing on a rainy day is not just an isolated moment, but an act that the desire to play, explore and dream will continue to live over time.

Arns Inke’s text expresses the idea that code in digital media produces real effects in the digital environment, transforming and generating results in real time; That being said, my work creates an environment that the viewer experiences and interacts emotionally, so it becomes an act in which each execution of the code generates feelings and transports them to a reality in which they can explore those elements of play and memory, connecting them with the emotions and memories of the observer.
