Microminicosmos
“That lack, small or large, in the reproduction (and I continue referring to the photos that illustrate my art magazines), that programmatically imperfect reproduction, suggests another work; the irreproducible point is there to generate not exactly a different work, but a different story. […] The reproduction itself becomes a work of art, or, more precisely, art without a work.” Microminicosmos is inspired by the sculptural work located in the downtown area of the city of Resistencia, Chaco. “Microcosm.” The name of the sculpture alludes to the small universe that is the city, and this work, alluding to the mini universe that surrounds the piece itself, is titled “Microminicosmos”. Searching in this non-reproduction of the relief and space of the work, it takes this impossibility to exploit it and make it the protagonist, through the oscillations of its curves it tries to take the viewer to the experience that traveling through it would mean, but from a different perspective.
Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development Microcosmos is a steel and marble sculpture 3.20 meters high and 4 meters deep, made during the 2004 biennial. The work is located in one of the busiest spots in the city, which means that its significance is not limited merely to its material qualities. The work is not only the sculpture, it is what surrounds it. On a normal day, the sound of cars on the sides, people crossing, the sun that runs through it with a changing light that never lets you see the same scene twice. On special occasions orchestras, or parades, even the occasional police scene are added. Here is the great problem of its reproduction, “From the moment in situ artistic activities could only lead to ephemeral, or intangible, results, the classic means of expression such as plans, sketches or descriptions of the works and photographs, encountered their limitations.” The idiosyncrasy of the city is surrounding the work, and is what completes it. So in order to at least try to transmit a little of its “essence”, “microminicosmos” uses oscillations in its shape, as if it were being physically moved through, and the sounds hidden in the daily life of the city. Beyond the cars, the people and the hustle and bustle, there is the crack that crosses nature in the middle of the chaos of the city. Cicadas, birds, dogs. The sound and vision of a city that, being a microcosm, also hides within itself a little of what it once was before the passage of man. By mere insistence on the irreproducibility of the work satisfactorily, pressing any key superimposes a photo of the place along with the sounds that accompany it, and if just one click is made, one of just the sculpture. When you press “A” everything dissipates, leaving “Microminicosmos” once again as the protagonist of the canvas.
