Widerspruch

Artist: Juan Zambrano

The work titled “Widerspruch”—which translates as “Contradiction” in German—is manifested through a series of rows of squares. This graphic composition symbolizes thoughts and ideas in constant change and contradiction, reflecting the chaotic and disordered nature of the creative process. The piece highlights how ideas can be opposites and not always follow a logical order, capturing the essence of a creative process in which contradictions and changes are inevitable.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

Inspired by Lillian Schwartz’s 1978 work “Googloplex,” “Widerspruch” takes a similar approach in the use of geometric patterns and visual interaction. As in “Googloplex”, my work employs an arrangement of black and white squares to create a rich and dynamic visual experience. The meticulous arrangement and visual rhythm reflect the energy and transformation present in Schwartz’s work, showing how contradictions can be integrated into a cohesive composition.

From an aesthetic point of view, the work uses a black and white color scheme to highlight the simplicity and duality inherent in contradiction. Rows of squares are distributed across the canvas in varied compositions that offer a rich and complex visual experience. The alternating colors and irregular spacing add a visual rhythm that reflects the inconsistency and flow of ideas.

Conceptually, “Widerspruch” explores contradiction as an essential characteristic of human thought. The work reflects how ideas and thoughts do not always follow a straight or coherent line; instead, they can be divergent and confront each other. The creative process, full of contradictory ideas, is captured in the final design, where the arrangement of squares symbolizes the struggle and resolution of these internal tensions.

As José Luis Brea points out in his analysis of electronic art, “The true tool through which everything we call art in the 20th century has been produced is called: immanent self-criticism.” This idea resonates in “Widerspruch”, where the arrangement of squares and their interaction reflect a process of self-criticism and exploration of the limits of visual language, integrating contradictions into meaningful artistic expression.

Furthermore, “Widerspruch” aligns with the redefinition of artistic practices in the 21st century. According to contemporary analysis, “we are not artists, nor of course ‘critics’. We are producers, people who produce. Our own work, the activity that concretizes it, is actually what produces us.” Instead of focusing on the creation of static objects, today’s artistic work is oriented toward the production of constantly evolving experiences and meanings. Similarly, “Widerspruch” is not limited to being a fixed performance, but acts as a dynamic space for reflection and interaction, encapsulating the challenge of contemporary artistic creation as an ongoing process and in dialogue with the viewer.
