Ojo del huracán
My work consists of the continuous rotation of a set of lines on an axis centered on the canvas, with a gradual and constant variation of color, which refers to a human eye, and at the same time that of a hurricane. It also has two sets of squares that open and close, creating the illusion of an eyelid.
Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development
To create this work I decided to be inspired by the works of Vera Molnár. In his works he mostly used primitive figures, combining them to achieve different results. She talked a lot about the infinite possibilities of expression that one has and took from Vitruvius: “Never go to sleep without drawing a line.” If we do not reproduce our ideas they are ruined, so we must always seek to express ourselves and explore to develop our work. It also speaks of curiosity about the possibilities and the beautiful in the random as something unique that is born, and allowing ourselves to be surprised by the results of this. Personally, I have always been a person categorized in what is figurative and what has an objective meaning. With Molnár’s reflections, I let myself be carried away towards the abstract, giving me a kind of expressive freedom. My work would initially be a representation of Vera Molnár’s work, but while I was making it I encountered the problem of not being satisfied with what I was doing. To be able to more easily analyze the things I was trying, I decided to divide the two systems I was working on, lines and squares. When I divided them I realized that they were better separated so I continued exploring individually. As I began to develop and experiment with my system of lines, I arrived at the shape of a kind of spiral, which to the figurative eye can have the shape of an eye or the center of a hurricane. Thanks to my disagreement, I also decided to continue working with the squares to see if in some way or another I could integrate them into the system of lines and convert them into a single system. It was here that I decided that the interactivity was no longer going, and I headed towards the shape of the eye. To make the eye “more eye” it occurred to me to put eyelids that flutter, but for this I was not sure where to start. I tried different methods, but nothing gave the result I was looking for, that’s why I went back to the squares. I made two sets of squares that would meet in the middle and I tried to make them open and close. I was able to achieve this, but it was a very unnatural movement, so I tried another method of movement to make it more organic. “It is no longer just that of “not committing the indignity of speaking for another” but that no sign, effect, object, figure, any entity or existing, can claim any dignity if its work is solely or mainly to serve another, to represent him…” Brea José Luis, in “Redefinition of artistic practices”. The function of my work was never to represent an eye or a hurricane and it is not valid as a “replacement” for either of these two. Personally, I feel that my work served as a personal journey towards my own abstraction and my detachment from traditional or realistic representation. It still refers to something from the real world, but it is not worth it solely because of its resemblance to reality. If it didn’t look anything like an eye, for me, it would still have value.
