Digital Memories

Artist: Zoe Delgado

“Digital Memories” is an interactive experience that fuses 3D visual elements with an immersive sound atmosphere. Developed on a three-dimensional web canvas, the background of the work changes randomly every millisecond, presenting a collection of animated images that capture the essence of contemporary digital culture. In this environment, the viewer has full control over rotation and perspective in real time, enabling a unique and personal exploration of the images.

The work seeks to represent the essence of the analog, such as memories, in the digital environment. This approach reflects the pursuit of Casey Reas, who explored the relationship between digital and analog, adding an additional layer of depth and meaning to the interactive experience.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

Inspired by the text “New Media” by Christiane Fricke, which addresses the evolution of art in the digital age, and in tune with the philosophies of Filliou and Fluxus, the work seeks to weave a network of interactions between technology, art and the viewer’s experience. Filliou advocated “permanent creation” and Fluxus promoted the active participation of the viewer. Also, I’m going to consider Nam June Paik’s perspective.

Nam June Paik, did not use the image synthesizer to produce existing images. “In his opinion, it was more difficult to destroy information than to create it. This position, together with the conviction that video art should be part of everyday life, saved him from getting lost in his search within the lonely universe of image and technology.”

This quote inspires me to involve everyday life in digital art, trying to represent the idea of remembrance or memory in my work.

From an aesthetic perspective, the work seeks to build a visual experience that encapsulates the diversity and effervescence of digital culture. The ever-changing colors and shapes reflect the dynamic and ever-changing nature of the digital world and in turn represents the memories alive in our memory constantly, creating a living canvas that breathes and evolves.

Relating to Nam June Paik’s philosophy, the work also seeks to go beyond simply creating pre-existing images. By allowing the background to change randomly and the viewer to be in control, a constructive destruction of visual information is invited, thus creating an experience that defies conventional expectations.

The active participation of the viewer, permanent creation and constructive destruction intertwine to form an experience that not only celebrates image and technology, but also invites the audience to be active participants in the constant creation and transformation of the digital universe that unfolds before them.

In conceptual terms, the work is related to the idea of “new aesthetics” in digital art, where interactivity and immediacy are fundamental elements. Additionally, he takes inspiration from Casey Reas, a prominent contemporary artist who explores the relationship between digital and analog.
