moments
“Moments” is a generative artwork that explores the illusion of cinematic scenes depicting a person’s most significant moments, whether facing their death or reflecting on their life. Inspired by the works of Lilian Schwartz and George Nees, this artistic creation uses squares in shades of gray to visually represent the bad, not-so-bad, and good moments that make up the human experience. In this work, each square represents a moment in the life of an individual. The squares vary in size and shade of gray, creating an ephemeral and dynamic appearance on the canvas. Some squares may overlap, while others fade over time, symbolizing the changing nature of human existence.
Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development
From a technical point of view, the work was developed using p5.js, a JavaScript integrated development environment that allows the creation of generative art. In terms of aesthetics, “Moments” adopts a grayscale color palette to evoke the atmosphere of black and white photographic and cinematic works. The use of squares as a basic shape creates a minimalist and universal aesthetic, emphasizing the simplicity of the human experiences represented. The work is developed on a 512x512 pixel canvas, which contributes to its digital aspect and generative nature. From a conceptual point of view, “Moments” is based on the reflections of important pioneers of the electronic image, such as Lilian Schwartz and George Nees, whose works explored the intersection between art and technology. Heinich’s reading of “The Work Beyond the Object” provides relevant context for understanding how contemporary art has expanded its definition beyond physical objects, encompassing generative and ephemeral works such as Moments.
