Clickeame
The creation of this work is inspired by the work of the multimedia artist Vera Molnar “Quatre éléments distribués au hasard, 1959” (Four elements distributed at random, in Spanish). Following its minimalist approach, the work constantly invites interaction, thus making the public an indispensable part of its existence. Only two types of diagonals, inclined to the left or to the right, will be responsible for generating what could be a kind of labyrinthine landscape. Furthermore, it is ephemeral and random, the same image will never be repeated twice, thus adopting many characteristics of artistic performances.
Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development
The concept of the work arises by taking characteristics of performances, as explained by the author Heinich in her book “The work beyond the object.” This type of art is characterized by its ephemeral nature and its need for the presence of the public for its development. Artistic performances are inherently unique, no two are ever identical. Likewise, with the “click me” instruction take the idea of the “user manual” present in many works of contemporary art.
On the other hand, the work is influenced by the text by Valery, Paul “The conquest of ubiquity” (1928)
What is ubiquity?
- adj. Said mainly of God: Who is present at the same time everywhere.
The author explains that in the same way that we are already accustomed to receiving energy, light and water in our homes, an habituation - or submission - will be generated in relation to new ways of consuming art.
“We will know how to transport and reconstitute in any place the system of sensations - or more precisely of stimulations - that any object or event provides in any place. The works will acquire a kind of ubiquity. Their immediate presence or their restitution at any moment will obey a call from us. We will feed on visual or auditory images that are born and disappear at the slightest gesture, almost a sign.”
With the massive use of technological devices and the Internet, the prophecy of the visionary Valery becomes reality. The power to consume and have what we want is just a click away. How does it influence us in our daily lives? What consequences does it bring? Is this a submission? Is it a labyrinth with no exit?
