Artwork presentation

Forma y algoritmo

Artist: Pilar Fargas

My practical work is based on the works of artists A. Michael Noll and Georg Nees. These artists are pioneers in digital computer art, generative graphics and mathematical algorithms.

Combining kinetic art and optical art, I seek to generate through movement a succession of elements that belong to mathematical forms, combining differences in sizes, which generate a new visual movement.

On the other hand, based on McLuhan’s text, I would like to raise the idea of the viewer as a means for the content of the work. That is, a digital work where it only works with the interaction of the viewer. Proposing the problem that the look is not enough, but also that we need the interaction of the viewer for the work to exist. From going to a museum, buying a ticket, entering an installation, contemplating the work, interacting with it, etc.

In my practical work proposal, I seek to raise this need of the viewer, reaching the point that without it the work does not exist.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

My work begins with an empty gray canvas. It needs human mechanics to finally exist. With the movement of the mouse the work begins; The canvas finally has color, changes color and a circle, an ellipse and a rectangle are drawn on it. With the movement of the hand they change size. The second interaction is generated by pressing the finger on the left mouse button, this causes the figures to be drawn on the canvas in a progressive, infinite way. When you release the mouse, they disappear, as if they had never existed.

If we think about Mcluhan’s text “The medium is the message”, I would like to propose the viewer as the medium for the work, the content, to exist. The medium shapes and controls the scale. But, within one medium there is another medium. The medium is the viewer, but it also involves many other elements that are necessary for the creation of the content.

Means that are not revealed, as if they did not exist. The structure of the program used to create my artwork eliminates the temporal and spatial factors of human association.

The interaction of the observer and the creator, of the medium and the content, not only depends on these, but also on the cultural matrix in which it operates.
