Incompleta
The appreciation and interpretation of a work of art can vary depending on who observes it, each person brings their individual perspective and their own experiences to the encounter with it. Which allows it to take on different meanings and resonances for each viewer. A viewer without a work to appreciate will be empty. A work of art without a contemplative gaze will be incomplete, lacking soul.
Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development
From different perspectives in “The work beyond the object” by Nathalie Heinich and “The medium is the message” by Marshall McLuhan, the relationship between the work of art and its means of expression is addressed. Heinich speaks to us about the notion that contemporary art transcends the traditional idea of the work of art as a physical and tangible object. According to Heinich, contemporary art increasingly focuses on the experience, process and ideas underlying the work, rather than focusing solely on the end result. This perspective questions the limits and conventions of art, challenging the idea that a work of art must be a concrete, tangible object.
On the other hand, McLuhan in his article “The medium is the message” emphasizes how the media and the technologies we use to transmit information influence the way we perceive the world. According to McLuhan, the medium itself has a profound impact on our experience and understanding of reality, beyond the specific content transmitted through it. McLuhan argues that we must pay attention to how the media affects our perception and participation in society.
Now, digital art, when created and experienced through digital media, challenges the traditional notion of the work of art as a physical and material object. The emphasis falls on the interactive experience, the use of technologies and the active participation of the viewer. This is in line with Heinich’s idea that contemporary art focuses on experience and process.
Furthermore, digital art also embodies McLuhan’s idea that the medium itself is a message. Don’t the unique characteristics of digital media, such as interactivity, immersion, and the ability to manipulate information in real time, influence how we perceive and experience art? The digital medium provides new forms of artistic expression and communication, and this has an impact on the way we understand and relate to works of art.
The work I selected to represent is that of Vera Molnar, the work is called, “1% disorder” is a work of generative art. Vera Molnar is a renowned pioneering artist in computational art, and this work is characterized by its algorithmic approach and automatic generation, where chance and programming combine to create a constantly evolving visual composition.
Once again the role of the medium and technology in the creation and appreciation of art is highlighted. Vera Molnar uses algorithms and programming to generate her work, which highlights the importance of the digital medium in her artistic expression. Like digital art in general, “1% Mess” challenges the traditional notion of the artwork as a physical, tangible object, as its generative and ever-changing nature emphasizes experience and process rather than the end result.
“Incomplete” is a new version of the work, which captivates through its repetitive and iterative structure of the code, which ensures a continuous repetition of the figures, creating a visually stimulating and constantly changing experience. This effect can generate a hypnotic or meditative sensation, drawing viewers to contemplate the movement of the paintings. Each individual has the opportunity to discover their own meaning and appreciate the unique patterns and movements that emerge.
As we dive into contemplation, I would like to invite us to reflect on the relationship between humanity and technology, as well as the role of programming as a form of creative expression. The invitation to reflect further enriches our experience when contemplating this work, as it calls us to explore the intersection between human creativity and the possibilities that technology offers us. It is a reminder that programming can be an artistic medium and a tool for expressing ideas and emotions, fostering a greater appreciation of the beauty that can be found in the marriage of art and technology.
