Artwork presentation

Through the Windows 1.0

Artist: Jessica Arazi

Through the Windows 1.0 is a work of generative art that allows us to observe through a screen what we see through a window. Thus, it is possible to connect with our natural origins from anywhere and at any time. The oscillatory movement present in the piece transmits the organicity of the natural world. A depth given by the gray scale is represented, which also allows accounting for perspective congruence.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

Is it possible to dissociate nature from the artificial technology created by human society?

The question raised in this context derives from the reflection on the creations made by the artist Grace Hertlein. Hertlein produced artistic pieces that display representations of elements that make up nature, such as trees or mountains. This quantization of a part of nature opened my spectrum of thought and allowed me to reflect on the Western binarism posed by the nature-artificial technologies dichotomy. On the other hand, Georg Nees’ pieces inspired me to consider the use of canvas as a means to create a window in my artistic piece, one that allows us to establish a link with the natural environment that surrounds us. In a similar way to when we contemplate nature through the windows of our homes, it is possible to establish a link with our natural roots also using technologies, as Valéry mentions in his work The Conquest of Ubiquity ”[…] it will be wonderfully pleasant to be able to change at will an empty hour, an eternal afternoon or an infinite Sunday in magic, tenderness or movements of spirit. There are bad days; there are very lonely people, and there is no shortage of those who are imprisoned by age or helplessness. with themselves, who already know each other very well. Lo and behold, those empty and sad moments and those beings […] are now masters of adorning their leisure or infusing it with passion. It is the connection with nature that returns our soul to the body, that allows us to go back to our origins and seek that necessary solace in immersion in urban concrete. Thus, nature creates its own assembly resulting in the most perfect and organic space ever made. And technologies are here to bring us closer to that natural assemblage in moments where our confinement does not allow us to establish a connection with it. The crucial thing is not the way we choose to connect, but rather achieving an effective connection that allows us to go back to our origins in the roots of nature. As McLuhan states, the medium is the message; Whether directly or indirectly, the medium that links us with nature will be one that allows us to achieve the consolation we need, one that gives us just a moment of contemplation, stillness and calm, whether in an open field surrounded by trees, birds and stars or between the four walls that enclose us in our own solitude.
