MAHUIDA

Artist: Cesia Damaris Perez

In this piece we will be able to observe the digital representation of MAHUIDA (“Mountain” in Mapuche language), presented as a 3D sculpture, composed of black and white photographs. This work is inspired by a revealing trip around the Andes Mountains, in Santa Crúz; Argentina. It proposes an immersive concept, where the viewer can cross and explore the mountain, the textures that the photographs give us, accompanied by the sound of the wind that resembles the sounds, landscapes and scenery of the place.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

MAHUIDA is a small approach to the immensity of the landscapes of the south of our country. Its translation in the Mapuche language is “Sierra or Mountain” and the choice to use this term comes from the history of the Machupe groups and their close proximity to these lands.

This digital work was designed through quadrangular prisms of different sizes, where we find printed photographs of the flora of some landscapes of these sites. Using the tools seen throughout the year, in the piece we will be able to observe movements, listen to sounds and be able to enter the 3D sculpture, achieving a visual tour of the vast majority of the textures that the photographs show us. On the other hand, in connection with nature and the diversity of animals that were presented, I began to think about how I could capture all that context in a digital piece. What do I want to say? How can I execute and carry it out? What feeling do I want to leave? These were some of the questions that arose, but then, having read the text “The new uses of performance” by the author Taylor Diana and “The code as a performative speech act” by Inke Arns, I understood that the path to capture this whole idea was not far away. Regarding the first, the author states that “the technological body is the new human body”, it is used to say and design something, these new technologies offer new options to develop our subjectivities, which arise from an unconscious loaded with sensations, images, ideas, a piece and/or a digital body, this is what happens with MAHUIDA. Regarding the text by Inke Arns, it raises the concept of “software art”, which refers to a form of art that uses computer programs (software) as its main material and through this form of art, people can create works that allow reflection on the software itself and how it affects our culture. In relation to the latter, to execute the work presented, computer programs were required to design it and through codes, mathematical calculations, etc.; being able to capture on a digital canvas all these sensations and ideas that the trip left behind.

In conclusion, I believe the work of the authors, like many others, is of utmost importance regarding the idea of being able to relate traditional art with new technological advances. That from an idea or concept that arises, as in this case from the experience of a trip, inside people, being able to execute it in a code, in a computer program and turn it into a digital, conceptual and artistic piece, being aware that it can be achieved, was very enriching.
