Отклик души

Artist: Ekaterina Komov

Отклик души

This will be a brief description of the work (min 150 - max 200 words). “Otklik души” is a work created based on a state of mind that is difficult to describe. A mixture of melancholy, sadness, comfort, tranquility. The combination of the aforementioned emotions, however contradictory they may be, produces a particular atmosphere, which is often difficult to express. The work perfectly describes what I cannot explain verbally. The resources I use are very simple, an image and sound effects. The image is of a dark forest, which seems to be located at night time, since a somewhat dark palette predominates. Likewise, the sound is a simple melody, plus a rain sound. But the combination of these allows a person to immerse themselves in a climate, which preferably is the one I want to convey to the viewers. Even so, the work is free to interpret.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

Reading the text by Marchán Fiz, Simón “Environments and playful spaces”, I managed to establish a strong connection with the objective of my work. The author mentions how there is a space that surrounds the viewer, through which he can move and develop. Said space affects the sensory activity of the viewer with a complex intensity, allowing them to be installed in that space and moment created by the author of the work, the environment. Among the tools I used to generate this result, I mainly used sound. Accompaniment music is essential for the conception of a mood or emotional state, so I decided to use a melody that transmits melancholic vibes. In addition to that, I used the sound of rain which incorporates that calming effect, in my opinion. Compared to “neo-dadaist environments”, my work contains the visual sense, but lacks tactile interaction.

In “On Contemporary Art”, César Aira talks about the work of art and reproduction, and defines it as an entity of precarious or ambiguous existence, suspended between before and after, subservient to a script that hides its beauty and charm like a secret. This approach led me to reflect and pour that meaning into my work of art, which consists of a digital canvas, which contains both visual and sound images. They are stored in some corner of the computer machine, which, regardless of the number of times you want to reproduce it, will comply with the order. So, what is the original work? The first reproduction perhaps, or does it simply not exist? I do not have the physical work, it does not exist in materiality. But unlike the author’s approach, my work does not evolve with each reproduction, it remains intact.
