Artist: Romina Troncoso

Thanks to the spaces they opened for reading and reflection exercises, my perceptual field expanded, the path was very enriching, so mainly thank you for that. It is clear that my curiosity brought me here, that is why it expands me to find so much knowledge in books. Being able to understand the artistic process from another perspective, not simply focusing on the work as a visual, sound expression. Etc. If not from a conceptual perspective, understanding that beauty is an imposed norm… since modernity (we could say). Art is a means of manifestation, through which values and ideologies are transmitted, always challenged by the socio-political.

Each art/artist is part of this universe, beyond its “artistic” expression, but, I believe, because it found a way to manifest what many remain silent about, or simply do not get involved in. I was able to realize that this is the healthiest anti-system way that can be found, a peaceful way of showing society through artistic expressions what the media tries to draw, or many times, being complicit with the systems of power (which are the ones who manage it). Large monopolies, such as television channels, control and indoctrinate through their news so that society creates a fictitious reality, using techniques, sensory and visual stimuli, so that it remains in a peaceful position. Thus, in this way, our perceptual field is diminished to the point of not being able to think or analyze what is happening around us on our own, and peacefully accept conditioning, and little by little we lose contact with what is real, with the present, the here and now.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

In this way, I resonate so much with artistic genres such as performance, and its means of delivering information with multiple methods to viewers. Simón Marchan Fiz, I call them the “new artistic behaviors.”

“From a conceptual point of view, a performance is a “medium without a medium” that directly communicates its message without the need to resort to an intermediate” Fricke, Christiane.

There is always the other side of the coin, and you have to be aware of it, as Taylor Diana puts it: “While we tend to think of performance as the body in action, we also have to accept that performance often works within an underlying system of power in which the body is just another product.”

The artists who carry it out use their bodies as a means of expression and transmission, mounting the work in any space, the social class to which the artist belongs is not a condition, so that only those who have the money to finance it can hang a work in a museum. They confront and question the idea of traditional art production.

The development of performance, happenings, installation or conceptual art throughout the last century are essential elements that cause the dematerialization of the artistic object.

The Artivist movement develops a language of freedom and autonomy that moves outside of fixed cultural norms, aesthetics, and the majority trend. It is one of the reasons why it makes me love this career, and art, more. These movements do not stay in the mold, they are not afraid, they face any imposition of power, showing, through different strategies, what power is capable of doing, and that many times we do not even realize it, because we keep the TV on, and believe in the fiction that we are told. They tell us day by day, living the reality of the media is staying asleep, living the reality of art is waking up, expanding our field, and thus being able to be open to different methods of domination, detecting what movie they are trying to tell us.

Through methods such as performance, it was possible to confront genocidaires during the dictatorship, their faces were shown, in a peaceful way they took to the streets to ask for justice, to ask for the missing. How deluded we were, that just at that time a World Cup was won, and what did they do with that? Cover! Hide what was really happening, entertain ourselves with a soccer game, while military torture was going on in the streets! The media was talking about the World Cup, and we were going out to celebrate.

I think and therefore I exist, Descartes said, how much reason in his analysis, I prefer to think, doubt, and question everything that exists as an imposed norm.

Thanks to the exercise that doubt gives me, I was able to rethink everything I had learned up to this point. Thanks to this subject I can reconfirm my path, and it is here, this is the career I choose, art is what makes visible what many want to hide. The means by which art is manifested are infinite… I would love to take a tour of the texts, which wove a temporary knowledge about the different artistic events, but it will be very extensive, and I have already gone on long enough.

I feel that art is what expresses anarchy to power systems, with greater dominance in our perceptual system. He always noticed the same thing, day by day I can notice how numb the human being is, when faced with external stimuli. Art is what becomes a means of communication focused on change and transformation. “The true artist helps the world by revealing mystical truths.” Nauman Bruce.

Mainly what I try to represent with my work is a performance, but it remains more of a mega virtualized installation, where the viewer is a fundamental part of it. Its main function is interactivity, simulating various atmospheres, with different scenarios in which the combination of sounds, images and videos is experienced. A journey through a virtual space in three dimensions. That is why I call the work “interface” because through the interaction of the keyboard or mouse an encounter is created between the PC and the user “interface between man and technology”. The final result will depend entirely on the intervention and decisions of the user, playing with the means made available to them.

The idea is that through the movements of the mouse the screens enter, where different videos of Ikeda Ryoji are being transmitted, then, by clicking we can change the images, which are from Ben Laposki, and with the combination of the keys we can play the available sounds.

The “rupture” of everything visual occurs when a key is held down, there is a video-art that I made, where what I try to convey is how traversed we are by television, that the only thing it does is intoxicate our mind, stimulate our senses, thoughts, and that our way of acting is guided by the information that they have to give us, they are in charge of misinforming us… But… after going through the different texts, I can see that I should not limit myself to thinking about this medium. simply from a television perspective, but at the same time I can think about it, how it happened in its beginnings, from a form of artistic manifestation, using it as a tool of art, before the evolution of these electronic media was centralized under the control of the state.

I like the idea of setting up an installation and that within it there are different spaces to be discovered by each viewer, intervention in the work is essential. The viewer is an active participant who gives meaning to the work. Flow, and recreate the installation, take a tour, immerse yourself in the endless complements that can be obtained with the different interactions given by the position of the mouse, pressing the keyboard, or by clicking… And in the same way, each one who intervenes, being a “scapegoat” as Sotag Susan described about the spectators of the happening, can be crossed in different ways, from each perspective and movements of self-interest, thus achieving a different journey for each participant, each result being ambiguous, at the same time, acquiring a new aesthetic identity. “Naturally, the contribution of art is defined above all by its capacity to engage in reflection, criticism, the search for aesthetic criteria and their possible applications” Fricke.

My reflection has to do with the media, but from a different position… The media is today a technological tool that helped us stay connected during a global pandemic. I can’t stop thinking about how influenced we are by TV as a means of communication, but the texts “made me adopt a critical stance towards television” Klaus Vom Bruch. I also believe in the tool that it gives us, having its positive and negative side, depending on the use and its industrialization.

I close with a fragment of Fricke’s text, quoting Peter Weibel, with whom I felt very identified: “In my work I would not like to limit myself to a single medium, to a genre professionalism, in which the latter defines himself as a painter and the latter as a writer. Everything is poetry, that is my motto.”
