Encierro
Encierro is a 3D work composed in p5js. The work is located in a deep room, with five walls with different reddish tones. In the center is a woman dyed violet, whose body moves in vertical circles. Her body language, posture, and attitude indicate a need for escape. The choice of colors aims to contextualize the work. The different reds are associated with blood and violence. On the other hand, purple refers to the “Not one less” movement.
Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development
Inspired by “On Contemporary Art” by César Aira (2010) and “Artivists-artists-activists” by Taylor Diana (2012), I developed a work exposing the feelings of women who are locked in the reality of a sexist world.
My intention was to represent the “Not one less” movement through the color violet, the fact that the woman is exposed only in that color refers to the relevance that the movement has on her. The reddish tones, which are associated with blood, and the depth of the room in which she is located place her in a hostile and violent context, similar to the reality caused by femicides and machismo that many women suffer on a daily basis.
The movements expressed by the woman are related to her need to escape from that room, in other words, from that reality that encloses her. The fact that they are circular is associated with the absence of an end and constant struggle.
Art is a form of military and visualizing realities by placing them in a place of exhibition and often raising awareness for the viewer. Many times this activism has to be accompanied by an explanation, as César Aira (2010) says in “On Contemporary Art” “there is nothing that speaks visually for itself.”
