Tejido Virtual

Artist: Santino Pesce Araujo

Virtual Fabric is created in the p5js program, and it consists of white lines which are superimposed on a black background, these are automatically generated at random, forming two circles, one internal and one external, each time the work is restarted a figure is created that is different from the previous one. These lines try to imitate the images that were formed in the works of Ben Laposky through the oscilloscope measuring electrical signals, where abstract graphics were created, which are considered pioneers of electronic art.

Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development

This work is developed so that the program’s algorithm forms random figures, which is inspired by the work of Ben Laposky, who tried to establish a relationship with the abstract composition of designs through mathematics, electronics and photography, this is very interesting because “Virtual Fabric” creates different structures by itself, since it contains a random within its code, forming the most similar thing to Laposky’s works.

It is also inspired by Mitchell’s “Ut Pictura Theoria. Abstract painting and language”, since the work insists on excluding literature and the themes of the plastic arts.

More than anything, it is about focusing on an illusion effect which is hypnotizing for the subject who observes it, and not so much on the meaning that the work itself has. It could be understood simultaneously as a scientific, religious and ethical-political reform. The innocent eye of the ideal spectator is at once the unbiased eye of science and the spiritually purified eye of individuals in a new social order brought about by religious reform and/or material revolution.
