Hora de partida
This work, called “Departure Time”, was inspired by the renowned artist Vera Molnár. She works in digital art with geometric figures, especially the square. Watching the work “Departure Time”, you can see that the squares shown on stage are dismantled, they look colorless and almost shapeless. These rows of squares allow us to show that, as one continues to look down, they leave the scene. By clicking left, the left row scrolls indefinitely, and with the right click, the right row scrolls in the same way as the left one.
Technical, aesthetic and conceptual development
My work was inspired by the artist Molnár, accompanied by Raymond Williams’ text “From the medium to social practice”. (1977): “The “medium” began as a definition of an activity through a seemingly autonomous force or object.” (Page 182). Where it refers to the fact that before there is the reason to express through a “medium” where one can put and carry out their communication of any type, there is human thought. As Raymond clarifies in his text the words of another author: “Bacon wrote about thoughts expressed through the “medium of words.” Thoughts exist before language and are then expressed through his “. (Page 183). This has been carried out since the beginning of humanity, addressing others with their own means of communicating. Starting in the 18th century, a long time later, these ways of communicating were expanded thanks to the medium of communication, the newspaper. Where one was already able to find out the news, announcements, etc., much faster and shared with a majority audience. Despite the years, it grew and became very successful.
At the end of the last century, this began to decline more and more, as new technologies gradually began to be installed more and more securely in people’s homes. The computer begins to become the new workplace. What happened to many artists like my chosen artist, Vera Molnár, where she encounters a computer, which would then forever be her means of artistic work. As Williams portrays “The author became a solitary manual worker, alone with his”. What I, particularly, see as a positive change, since these new artists mark a new era in the visual field, with ingenious and very beautiful proposals.
Linked to Raymond Williams’ text is Mcluhan Marshall’s text “The medium is the message” (1964): “An abstract painting represents a direct manifestation of creative thought processes as they might appear in a computer design. However, what we are considering here are the mental and social consequences of designs or schemes insofar as they amplify or accelerate existing processes. For, the “message” of any medium or technology is the change in scale, rhythm or patterns that it introduces into human affairs.” (Page 30). Continuing with the new work techniques in the artistic field, considering that what is innovative about this area is what is being worked on, since as Marshall mentions, this change of scale in the medium penetrates the human thought.
